The Silverstone Classic 23rd-25th July 2010

Postby pjgrey » Tue Dec 08, 2009 9:26 pm

Silverstone Classic 2010 - The Worlds Biggest Classic Car Event!

After the fine showing of 220 cars in 2009 the MX-5 Owners Club has again been invited to attend The Silverstone Classic’s 2010 event, which runs from 23rd to the 25th July, thus firmly establishing our marquee as a “modern classic”.

Last year’s event was attended by a record 65,500 people, making it Silverstone’s second largest event after the Grand Prix. Many enthusiasts consider it better than a GP, since visitors are free to walk around the pits, inspect the cars and chat with their owners. We were even allowed to wander around the pit lane stand on the pit wall to watch the races – just like in the good old days of Grand Prix!

The first key ingredient of this event is a feast of world class nostalgic motor racing, across all decades from the 1920s to the 1990s, featuring over 700 classic racing cars, including such great names as Ferrari, Maserati, ERA and Auto Union; Bentley, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Porsche; Cooper, Tyrell, March, and Lotus, all competing in 21 races over the 3 days, including a Le Mans style dusk race. The Silverstone Classic is not totally historic, as it includes more contemporary races, such as Group C, Saloons, Super Touring Cars and late Formula One cars being raced and seen in their appropriate surroundings.

The second key ingredient is the great assembly of classic cars from the extensive list of over 80 Owners’ Clubs across the UK and overseas; over 4000 cars were on display across the event period in 2009.

Things to look forward to at this years event.

Hi all,
I have just been notified that owing to high demand, there will be quotas on numbers of car club members being allowed into the inner circuit at this year's Silverstone Classic. If you plan to attend, it is advisable to book your tickets early. There is also a discount if you book before the end of March.
Tickets are available online, or by telephone on 08712 310849 - don't forget to use the booking code SC10MX5 to get your discount and access to the MX5OC stand in the inner circuit.

To those of you that have been to the Silverstone Classic before, which is the best day to go if you are only able to make one day, the Saturday or Sunday?

The Silverstone website has no details of the programme as yet.

The Saturday is going to be mental traffic wise as the Prodigy are playing a massive outdoor gig at the MK Bowl (which is where I'll be 8) )

I would suggest that Saturday will offer better value for money. The day will be longer and on Sunday competitors will be leaving early and stands will be shutting up shop.

Bespoke sessions for clubs, manufacturers and/or dealers can also be

EUROPE’S MOST ENTERTAINING CAR-THEMED EVENT

· The World's biggest classic racing festival
· Live music concerts on Friday and Saturday
· Great family entertainment
· Celebrity race in 500 Abarths
· Celebration of Harley-Davidson®
· So much to see and do

The 2010 Silverstone Classic (23-25 July) will be the best yet, with more racing, more classic cars, more live music and more to see and do both on and off-track for the whole family.

Proudly carrying the tag of 'the world's biggest classic racing festival', the Silverstone Classic is much more than a glorious celebration of motor racing heritage. It is a complete event dedicated to providing a fabulous day or weekend out for everyone.

"We are building on the success of the 2009 event to make the Silverstone Classic bigger and better," said Daniel Ward of Classic Historic Racing Ltd, the event promoters. "We are proud to be promoting the World's biggest classic racing festival, which is a platform for a great day of family entertainment."

On-track is a stellar line-up of races and this will be proper classic racing, not theatre, as 1000 hard-charging racers do battle in 800 cars spanning seven decades of motor racing heritage. In total, 23 races will cover Grand Prix cars, sports, GT, saloon and single-seater racing cars from 1930 to the 1990s.

"An unrivalled quality of racing will be the biggest feature of the 2010 Silverstone Classic," said event director Nick Wigley. "We are this year celebrating 60 years of the Formula 1 World Championship, which started at Silverstone in May 1950, with three dedicated races to capture the romance, development and British influence on motor sport. We are also proud to add, this year, the hosting of the launch of the Royal Automobile Club Historic Tourist Trophy for a wonderful grid of pre ’63 GT cars. Indeed, across two full days of on-track action, there are mouth-watering races for every enthusiast."

Live music will again be a big feature of the Silverstone Classic in 2010, with major concerts on the evenings of both Friday (23 July) and Saturday (24 July). Entry to both concerts will be included within the circuit admission charge.

On Friday night, Silverstone will rock to the sounds of two classic British bands from the 1960s and 1970s, when The Yardbirds and Dr Feelgood take to the stage to thrill the thousands of visitors to the opening day of the Silverstone Classic.

Then, on Saturday evening, the story comes bang up to date with a show including Stars from the X Factor, with Jedward, Danyl Johnson and Ruth Lorenzo, and The Rick Parfitt Jnr. Rock Band. Rick junior has rocking in his genes, as he is the son of legendary Status Quo member Rick senior.

Before the live concert starts on Saturday evening, there will be an important auction of classic cars and memorabilia, organised by Bonhams. Bonhams Motoring Department is the largest auction house to hold scheduled auction sales of classic and vintage cars and memorabilia, so a spectacular line-up of road and race cars is assured.

On Friday evening, a very special race will feature celebrities from the worlds of radio, TV, music and entertainment racing head-to-head to raise funds for the Bobby Moore Foundation. The stars will climb into a fleet of specially race-prepared 500 Abarths and take to the famous Silverstone Historic Grand Prix circuit in a half-hour race including a Le Mans-style pit-stop and driver change.

Along with the racing and rocking, Silverstone will be packed with off-track activities and attractions to make it a weekend to suit the whole family.

Over 100 car clubs displaying 6000 privately owned classic cars will pack out the infield, while new for 2010 is an area dedicated to hot-rods. Street car shoot-outs and Group B rally cars of the early 1980s will add to the sheer diversity of attractions. Funfairs, shopping malls, hot-air balloon fly-outs and air displays are all part of the show.

Fans of two-wheel action have not been forgotten, either, as motorbikes will play a big part in the Silverstone Classic, with the legendary Harley-Davidson marque at the heart of the two-wheel attractions.

Already scheduled to appear on track are seven-times TT winner Mick Grant and current lady TT rider Maria Costello. Both will ride the charismatic late-1970s Suzuki XR69 F1 machines in Heron Team colours. Drag bikes, parades, classic bike areas all add to the event's two-wheel appeal.

"The Silverstone Classic is the biggest and best classic racing festival in the World as well as Europe's most entertaining car-themed event," said event director Nick Wigley. "Flat out fun for all the family is core to the attraction of the Silverstone Classic."

-ends-

Editors’ notes: The Silverstone Classic (23-25 July, 2010) is firmly established as the World’s biggest classic racing festival. The spectacular three-day event is staged at the famous Silverstone circuit, birthplace of the FIA Formula One World Championship and home of the British Grand Prix. The Silverstone Classic features over 1000 drivers racing more than 800 of the world’s finest competition cars spanning the full spectrum of motor sport history. Adding to the rich on-track entertainment, the Silverstone Classic features a vast array of off-track attractions with 6000+ classic cars and bikes on display, hot rod demonstrations, fun fair, parades and live music concerts featuring classic rock bands and finalists from the X Factor guaranteeing a memorable day out for all the family.

Tickets: Available in advance via the ticket hotline on 0871 231 0849 or from the official event website http://www.SilverstoneClassic.com. Ticket price includes car parking, grandstand seating, paddock access and live music.

Update

Postby pjgrey » Fri Jun 04, 2010 8:52 am

On all three days of this year’s Silverstone Classic, Grand Prix Events is offering anyone with a nice road car the opportunity to ‘stretch its legs’ on-circuit. There is also the opportunity to get family and friends involved with dedicated sessions for passenger rides – or perhaps they might want to have their own fun while you are doing the serious bit on the GP circuit?

The brand new, extended Stowe circuit is scheduled for launch early in June. It has some great facilities, right in the centre of Silverstone’s Grand Prix loop and GPE has secured it for duration of the Silverstone Classic for the enjoyment of all – providing an unprecedented opportunity to take part in the one of, if not THE largest historic racing festivals in the world without having to buy a classic racing car!

In addition to the road car sessions, there will also be sessions enabling competitors to give their race cars a shakedown, plus exclusive sessions tailored to suit organisations.

Spaces are strictly limited – a maximum of 24 entries per session (for exclusive sessions, more cars are welcome but only 24 will be allowed on-circuit at any one time) so we recommend you get your entries in quickly.

Prices start at a preferential rate of £75 for Mazda Club members for a generous 45 minute session – more than enough track time for most cars.

For an entry form or for more information, please email GPE2010@btinternet.com or leave your name and telephone number on 07562 133755 and GPE’s event manager, Carol Mason will be pleased to revert to you with all of the information you require.
